What are the penalties for facilitating the sending of unsolicited bulk e-mail (”spam”)?

I’m writing a paper for mass media, so sources would be great!

Also, how much does one active email address go for? Does it have a market value?

**I’m not doing this, I’m just writing a paper on it. I KNOW that it can be illegal to sell info. without consent. But what are the specific laws?

google these: “Can SPAM act” and “spam king convicted” to get good answers. BTW, the spam king was arrested again for other nefarious crimes this week….

As for the market for email addresses, the distribution channel is evolving to be much more specialized. It is probably not so much the email addresses themselves that are sold (they are, but they are practically given away) but rather access to bot-nets that can allow the spamming to evade detection.
